Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2015, $500,000)

Victims of human trafficking often have various co-existing and overlapping legal needs that arise in connection with their victimization. OVC’s work in this area confirms the strong need for legal representation. Legal services providers are also among the most common partners of OVC’s Human Trafficking Program grantees. And yet, grantees continue to report to OVC that they struggle to find adequate legal services to meet the needs of their clients. Because it is critical to ensure that these needs are met with trained legal services providers to improve the outcomes for trafficking victims, OVC is funding training and technical assistance to expand access to comprehensive legal services for victims of human trafficking. The overarching goal of this program is to expand victims’ safety, financial security, independence and self-sufficiency through access to trained legal services providers.
With this award, the Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking will seek to: 1) Improve the quality and quantity of legal services through training and technical services for legal services providers; and 2) Improve identification and referral for legal services through training and technical assistance for social services. providers.
