This program will provide funding for shelter and transitional housing and other assistance to victims of domestic violence and their companion animals, which under this program means pets, service animals, emotional support animals, and horses. Unity House of Troy and its project partners – the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS), HeartsHerd Animal Sanctuary & Rescue Center (HeartsHerd), and the Hawk’s Ridge Veterinary Services (Hawk’s Ridge) will enhance and expand support services and transitional housing assistance for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking in Rensselaer County, New York. The project will also provide temporary, safe shelter and care for victims’ companion animals. Additionally, Unity House and partners will collaborate to provide trainings and community education events focused on the dynamics of domestic violence, the link between domestic violence and animal abuse, best practices for service provision and referrals, and confidentiality practices. The service area will encompass the urban City of Troy and expand throughout the entirety of Rensselaer County, incorporating sparsely populated rural areas.
