Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $120,000)

The Legal Clinic (TLC) proposes to plan and implement a Criminal Immigration Training Project, which is designed to build capacity in Hawaii’s legal community through increasing awareness and expertise among legal practitioners and law students about immigration consequences of certain criminal charges and convictions. Project activities include internships for law students, training for legal practitioners, and a Crimmigration Seminar to be held in the fall of 2024. Intended beneficiaries include law students, public defenders, prosecutors, law enforcement personnel, private attorneys, and other legal service providers within the state of Hawaii. Expected outcomes include increasing collective awareness and subject matter knowledge  in the field of “crimmigration” among Hawaii’s legal practitioners, which will hopefully lead to a lower rate of deportations due to criminal charges over time.
